I set off from amidst vast glaciers on this epic Iceland overlanding journey; the weather makes them hard to see, though I catch glimpses now and then from my custom VW T4 Syncro 4x4 camper van. I drive up into the mountains to the orange peaks of Kerlingarfjöll, where the scenery is incredible as mountains hiss and steam rises. From there, I take Route 35 south to see Gullfoss and the geysers. Since our diesel heater needs spare parts, we drive to the capital. South of Reykjavík, the Sundhnúksgígar lava fields prove inaccessible due to the storm; however, we discover amazing coastal formations and a road swallowed by lava. Finally, I head west, leaving the capital behind.
