We took our VW T4 Syncro across Iceland’s rugged Snæfellsnes Peninsula, facing brutal 30 m/s Atlantic storm winds and ocean waves. Here is how we survived two days of extreme Arctic overlanding.

Iceland in miniature. The Snæfellsnes Peninsula brings together glaciers, volcanoes, lava fields, waterfalls, ravines, black-sand beaches, and a rugged Atlantic coastline in one spectacular region. At its heart stands Snæfellsjökull, the glacier-capped volcano that inspired Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth.
If you only have two days to explore Iceland, Snæfellsnes is an excellent choice. Located within easy reach of Reykjavík, the peninsula offers an incredible variety of landscapes in a relatively compact area. I was especially captivated by the black-sand beaches, the rugged Atlantic coastline, and the vast lava fields.

I’ve built up my VW T4 Syncro as an overlanding vehicle, and now it’s time to put it to the test in real-world conditions. Was all that work worth it?
