How does KFC run out of its one essential ingredient, close hundreds of restaurants and prompt people to call the police?

This is the chaotic story of the 2018 British shortage, from the failed distribution switch and locked restaurants to uncertain pay, the FCK apology, the gravy sequel and the supplier that came back.

One count finds 646 restaurants out of action. Police ask people to stop calling. Burger King starts a Ricebox bidding war, KFC marketers work in depot freezers, a driver says nobody has a clue, and an empty bucket apologises with three rearranged letters.
