Located just a 1-hour drive from the capital city, the hike to Glymur is an absolute must-do if you want an adventure that gets you away from the typical tourist crowds.

But fair warning: this wasn't just a casual stroll in the park! I ran into a surprise or two along the way (let’s just say you need a good head for heights and some steady footing!). From scrambling through a literal cave to standing on the banks of a wild river crossing (and sometimes using a narrow log to cross it), this trail kept me on my toes from start to finish.

The weather treated me kindly and despite a late start I never felt rushed. Even as I was finishing up just before midnight there was still plenty of light to see where I was going without the need for a torch.

The Glymur Waterfall trail is circular and usually includes crossing the river about 30 minutes in, ascending up the east side of the canyon, wading back through the river at the top of the trek and above the giant waterfall, and then descending the west side of the canyon and river back towards the car. That was the intention anyway!

So what was the payoff? Absolutely unbelievable views of a massive canyon and a towering 198-meter (650-foot) waterfall cascade. It ended up being one of the most terrifyingly beautiful and terrific experiences of my entire trip.
