You'll hear how waterlogged trading towns fired their king in writing, invented the stock market and the corporation, briefly ruled the seas, then quietly slipped from superpower to small nation.

We also tell the parts the tidy origin story leaves out — the slave trade, colonial rule in Indonesia, the founders who executed each other — and follow the fight against water from the deadly 1953 flood to the Delta Works and today's sea-level planning for 2100. One central mystery threads it all: how do you found a country on land that doesn't yet exist?
