For as long as anyone kept records, there were two places on earth with no
mosquitoes. Antarctica, and a country of 396,000 people in the North Atlantic.
On the 16th of October 2025 a man in a garden north of Reykjavík caught three
of them. Now only Antarctica is left.

That story went around the world in a day, and almost nobody who shared it
could name another true fact about Iceland.

They could name plenty of stories. That Icelanders believe in elves. That
there is no McDonald's. That beer was illegal. That nobody locks a door.
Some of it is exactly right, in ways stranger than the version people repeat.
One of them falls apart the moment you look at the actual survey data.

The ground here opened nine times in nineteen months. The state bought nine
hundred houses in a town it could not promise to protect. One in five
residents was born somewhere else. Last year 2.3 million people came to look.

This is what life is really like on an island that is still being built.
