In 1914, Ernest Shackleton set out to cross Antarctica on foot. His ship, the Endurance, never reached the shore. She was trapped in the ice of the Weddell Sea, crushed, and sank — leaving twenty-eight men on drifting ice, with no radio and no hope of rescue.
