???? August 16–21, 2025 — Begin Again, Days 24–29. From Tundra to Oslo, A Chapter Ends.

I am nearing the conclusion of my time in Norway, amidst a beauty that feels endless. The far north was tundra—raw, sparse, elemental. Here the land softens. Fields of barley, oats, and potatoes stretch across the valleys, while forests climb the hillsides and crown modest summits.

Like the Appalachians I know far better in the United States, I follow rivers through valleys between ridgelines, climbing and descending now and then into the next watershed. The landscape isn’t vast or overwhelming, but its depth is real and penetrating.

Despite this northern latitude, the tree cover and farmland make the land feel almost ordinary—so much so that I must remind myself how far north I still am. The Arctic Circle lies just behind me, and only weeks ago I stood at Europe’s northernmost point, at North Cape.

Streams gather in the valleys—pure and cold—until their combined voices rise, merging into rivers that push southward. They all lean toward the Glomma, Norway’s great artery, and my guide into Oslo—the capital, and the place where this chapter closes.

After a pause with old friends, I’ll ride to Larvik on the coast, where a ferry will carry me across the North Sea to Denmark. Norway has been extraordinary, more than I imagined. But the journey continues, unfolding mile by mile—all the way to Cape Town.
