When you don't catch something, you say "huh?". So does almost everyone else: in a study of everyday conversation, every one of the 31 languages the researchers checked seemed to have a word like it, from Cha'palaa in Ecuador to Lao, Siwu and Murrinh-Patha. So why is this word so similar, when dog, perro and chien are nothing alike? It isn't a grunt, and it didn't spread like OK. The researchers' answer is convergent evolution: conversation shapes it the way water shapes sharks and dolphins. Plus how often we need it (about once every minute and a half), the Ig Nobel Prize it won, and what to say instead of huh in Spanish, French and English.
