Why is Eastern Europe still so much poorer than Western Europe? One continent, shared roots, and an economic line that has barely moved since World War II. In this map documentary we look at the two forces behind it: the Iron Curtain and communism, and the geography of Eastern Europe itself, from the flat plains of Poland and Ukraine to the Balkan mountains, the chokepoints of the Danish straits, the Bosphorus and Gibraltar, and the North Sea oil that made the West richer still. Then the twist: Poland's rise, and why young people are leaving Ireland, one of the richest countries on Earth.
