What did Donald Trump and the United States try to purchase Greenland so many times throughout it's history?

Transcript:
In 2019, the U.S. president Donald Trump tried to purchase Greenland from Denmark. This sounds crazy, right? Although it might seem silly, this actually isn't the first time the United States has tried to do this.

First, let me take you back to the year 1867. The U.S., with the help of this guy, had just purchased Alaska from Russia, and were now looking to expand their power even more. This guy came back and considered the possibility of the United States annexing both Greenland and Iceland, but, in the end, no offers were made.

The U.S. did, however, make offers in both 1910 and 1946, both of which were declined by Denmark.

This brings us to the most recent proposal, made by Donald Trump in 2019. Even though Denmark declined the offer, Trump's proposal left a lot of people confused on why he would want Greenland in the first place. The main reason why he wanted Greenland so much actually has to do more with its geographical location.

You see, as ice keeps melting, many arctic shipping routes and other potential military advantages will open up. On top of this, a U.S. owned piece of land in the arctic would help counteract the Russian and Chinese influence on the region.
