A guided walk into an ice cave under Vatnajökull — Iceland's biggest ice cap. Through water, under hundreds of metres of ice, past volcanic ash and air sealed in centuries ago.

This cave was carved by meltwater last winter, and it will be gone by spring. That's the whole point of going now.

Filmed on the south coast of Iceland, near Skaftafell, in January 2019.

HOW TO DO THIS YOURSELF
• Fly into Keflavík (KEF) — about 5.5 hours from the US east coast
• From there it's a 4–5 hour drive east along the south coast
• You cannot enter these caves alone — book a licensed glacier guide
• Cost: roughly $150–200 per person
• Season: November to March — the caves don't exist in summer
• Book weeks ahead, the good slots sell out
• Bring boots and a spare pair of socks. You will get wet.

The ice cave scenes in Interstellar were filmed on this ice cap, at Svínafellsjökull.

Next episode: Reynisfjara — the black sand beach.
