On October 27, 1962, a Soviet submarine officer named Vasily Arkhipov said no, and that one word may be the reason the world still exists.

This is the entire history of US-Russia relations, from the $7.2 million Alaska sale in 1867 to the war in Ukraine today. Along the way: the Utah pilot who bombed Berlin with chocolate, the Soviet officer who ignored a computer screaming that America had launched missiles, and the college kids who beat the best hockey team on earth. Then we put both countries side by side on money, ships, allies, land and nuclear weapons, and show which card makes the others nearly useless.

If a US-Russia war ever went hot, who would actually hold the stronger hand? The answer isn’t the one you’d expect.
