The strategic significance of Greenland grown markedly in the context of Euro-Atlantic security, most visibly following US President Donald Trump’s threat to “take” the territory.

Although Washington backpedaled on its plan, as well as from threats to place tariffs on NATO’s European allies, US strategic realignment continues to pose politico-military dilemmas for the Arctic, Nordic and Baltic frontlines – and for Europe more broadly.

This Policy Dialogue assessed the rapidly changing developments surrounding Greenland from the perspectives of Denmark, Greenland, Sweden and the United States. It offered insights into how the EU and NATO allies are responding to rising tensions in the Arctic and consider pathways for strengthening regional stability.

The event took place within the framework of the EPC’s Northern Europe Platform (NEP), which provides a forum for analysis and debate on developments in the Nordic, Baltic and Arctic regions. The Platform aims to inform and shape European policymaking, notably in the areas of defence and security, economy and innovation, and climate and sustainability.
