A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan.

On Monday, 20 April 2026, at approximately 4:53 p.m. local time (07:53 GMT). The earthquake, centered about 100 km (62 miles) east-northeast of Miyako in Iwate Prefecture, occurred at a shallow depth of roughly 10 km.

Tsunami Warnings: The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a tsunami warning for the Pacific coasts of Iwate, Aomori, and parts of Hokkaido, with waves initially predicted to reach heights of up to 3 metres (10 feet).

Observed Waves: The first tsunami waves were recorded shortly after the quake. An 80 cm (31-inch) wave hit Kuji port in Iwate at 5:34 p.m. local time.

Evacuation Orders: Authorities issued urgent orders for residents in coastal and riverside areas to evacuate immediately to higher ground or designated evacuation buildings.

Seismic Intensity: The tremor reached a "maximum seismic intensity of upper 5" on the Japanese scale in some areas, which is strong enough to make walking difficult and cause unreinforced concrete walls to collapse. Shaking was felt as far away as Tokyo.

Infrastructure and Safety Updates

Transport: Bullet train services (Shinkansen) between Tokyo and Aomori were suspended immediately following the earthquake for safety checks.

Nuclear Facilities: No abnormalities or problems have been reported at nuclear power plants in the affected regions, including the Fukushima Daiichi, Fukushima Daini, Onagawa, and Higashidori plants.

Damage Reports: As of the latest updates, the government's crisis management team is still confirming the full extent of human and material damage. Early reports from national broadcaster NHK indicated no immediate visible major damage at several ports in Iwate.

Stay Informed: Residents and travellers in the area should monitor the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) website for real-time tsunami warning updates and follow instructions from local authorities.
