A milk truck tows another onto the bridge at Selfoss. Then the cable snaps.
In 1944, an ordinary delivery ended in Iceland’s largest river by volume.
From a rental car on the Ring Road, Selfoss looks like a sensible place to buy milk. Stand on the bridge walkway and the traffic arrives through the soles of your boots. The deck moves. The cables hum. There is a reason to pay attention to both.
The first bridge came from Newcastle in pieces, crossed the frozen lowlands on sledges, and needed a local smith to make its suspension rods fit. Beside it, Tryggvaskáli collected the town’s first school, a royal beer bill and an unusually punctual ghost. The milk trucks came later.
Follow the crossing into the dark Ölfusá, then out across a plain that kicked sideways in the 2008 earthquake. Timber houses could flex. Some concrete columns could not. In the rebuilt centre, even the old dairy has had a second construction date.
By the time another tanker rolls onto the steel span, a small movement underfoot has acquired a rather specific history.
A STORY. NOT A GUIDE.
