POV: You can only stay in Italy ???????? for 90 days on an American passport without a long stay visa, so you decide to visit Albania ???????? because it isn’t part of the Schengen Area and doesn’t count against your 90 days.

Përshëndetje Albania ???????? ????. My next post will have more details on Albania. Y’all know I love to share fun facts and practical information too on every country we visit.

With an American passport, we can stay up to 90 days in the Schengen area during any 180-day period. Once those 90 days are up, you have to leave for another 90 days before you can return.

Because we’ll be back in Spain in July for the summer camp group trip I’m hosting, more details @themomtrottergrouptrips, we had to exit the Schengen area for a few days so we don’t overstay our 90 days and risk getting fined or banned for a 1yr plus.

➡️ Did you know about this rule?
Have you ever over stayed your visa?

❓As always, I’m happy to answer any questions below to the best of my ability ????.

Tip: I use an online Schengen calculator to help calculate my days because the 90 day within 180 days rule can be very tricky and confusing and I don’t want to take any chances.

More info: The Schengen area started in 1985 as an intergovernmental project between five EU countries – France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg and has gradually expanded to become the largest free travel area in the world.

There are 29 countries that are part of the Schengen area - Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland.

You can freely travel within the Schengen area as there are no borders or border checks, however as an American you only have 90 days within 180 days to do so.
