On Day 8 of our Iceland road trip, we immersed ourselves in the wild and rugged beauty of East Iceland. From the dramatic black sand dunes and jagged peaks of Stokksnes to the striking coastal views at Hvalnes Lighthouse, the day ended with a tranquil visit to the hidden Fólaldafoss waterfall nestled along the rugged Road 939.

Day 8: Black Sands, Coastal Beacons & Hidden Waterfalls – Stokksnes, Hvalnes & Fólaldafoss

8.1: Stokksnes
Famous for its dramatic black sand dunes and the towering Vestrahorn mountain, Stokksnes is a photographer’s paradise. The wild landscape here feels otherworldly, with constant shifting sands and sharp mountain ridges framing the coast.

8.2: Hvalnes Lighthouse
Perched on the rocky coastline, this striking lighthouse offers stunning panoramic ocean views. It’s a perfect spot to enjoy the raw power of the Atlantic and watch seabirds soar overhead.

8.3: Fólaldafoss (Folaldafoss)
Tucked away along the rugged Road 939 in East Iceland’s terrain, Fólaldafoss is a peaceful waterfall that rewards visitors willing to explore off the beaten path. Its serene setting makes it an ideal place to unwind and appreciate Iceland’s quieter natural beauty.
