Iceland is a land of fire, ice, and... forgotten history. Join me in this episode as we trek across the southern coast via the Great Icelandic Ring Road (Route 1) to visit two of its most atmospheric locations!
???? First Stop: The Eyvindarholt DC-3 Wreck
Most tourists flock to the famous Sólheimasandur plane wreck, but tucked away near Eyvindarholt lies a lesser-known piece of aviation history. We explore the skeletal remains of this Douglas DC-3, which has been reclaimed by the elements and the vast Icelandic landscape. It’s haunting, quiet, and far away from the crowds.
???? Second Stop: Loftsalahellir Cave
Next, we head toward the Dyrhólaey Peninsula to find the ancient Loftsalahellir Cave. This spot isn’t just a geological wonder; it was once used as a meeting place for local farmers. We’ll strap on our hiking boots and follow a steep, muddy and slippery path to the top. The view looking out from the cave mouth over the black sand beaches is arguably one of the best perspectives in South Iceland.
???? This is the ninth chapter of a solo pilgrimage around Route 1. If you've ever dreamed of visiting the Land of Fire and Ice, or if you’re planning your own Ring Road expedition, hit that SUBSCRIBE button and join me as we head into the wild.
