Summer skies, 16°C in town… and then Mount Wellington dropped SNOW on us — in summer. ❄️ Hobart's 1,271 m bodyguard runs on tundra rules: Antarctic winds hit it first, the weather flips in 15 minutes, and the summit sign asks one question — ARE YOU PREPARED? (We were not.)
The finale of our Tasmania trip starts soft: Battery Point's colonial lanes (including a house literally for sale mid-walk ????), cafe-hopping past the Blue Café and bakeries with mountain views — then the Tasman Bridge story (it collapsed in 1975 and split the city for two years), the 45-minute climb from 16° to 8°, winds that steal cameras, King Khan poses, kulfi-frozen hands… and the moment "rain" became snow while the sun was still shining on the other side of the mountain.
⛰️ KUNANYI / MOUNT WELLINGTON NEED-TO-KNOWS
• 1,271 m above Hobart; 4-hour track from the base — or a 45-min summit drive (we drove; our knees voted yes)
• Tundra climate: 16° at the foothill → 8° at the summit, in ONE drive
• Sunny-day winds 150+ km/h; bad weather crosses 200 km/h — Antarctic chill winds strike here first
• Weather can flip in 15 minutes: carry extra layers EVEN in summer (we didn't — learn from us)
• No tall trees at the summit, only shrubs & herbs; boardwalk + glass shelter up top
• Visiting is FREE — the jackets and the respect are on you
