In this video we recreate an ancient Germanic round shield structural design based on historical evidence from combat archaeology, from the Vendel and Viking periods. We add to this using our own artistic flare, as artists and shieldwrights would have done to represent their Germanic clans. Red was a color used to indicate hostile intent. Even though we used modern raw materials and tools for wood shaping, the design structure and assembly techniques are the same as those used over 1000 years ago.
Our WOLF OF ODIN round shields are 33" wide and weigh 12 pounds. Shields have been discovered across Northern Europe with weights up to 17 pounds! Ours are built based on design plans from a multitude of discoveries found in burial mounds across Scandinavia and Iceland. We also took into account the old Norwegian war law codes and scriptures in many sagas describing the construction of these round shields. We built our shields with two layers of coniferous wood in a double ply construction to increase core strength. We use a tanned leather hide on the face of the shield, which greatly increases durability when handling weapon strikes. Traditional shields have been discovered using tanned as well as untanned hide. Shields were sealed with oil to repel water when in rain or at sea. We have built these with a thick rawhide edge, stitched with hand cut rawhide lace, as would have been done to help constrict the planks and protect the edge when hit in combat. The edge is finished off with 1/8" thick iron clamps that are fastened with traditional round head steel rivets. We built these using two different boss types. Icelandic domed or Vendel period spiked, both recreated based on discoveries from those times.
