I Visit An Arctic Spy Town and Get Stranded in the Biggest, Strongest Blizzard of My Life.

It is deep winter in the high north of the Arctic. Big blizzards and snow storms are on the forecast, El Nino related probably, so I am heading down off the wild arctic mountain plateaus
to ride out the storms in my van in the fishing capital of arctic Norway, one of the most remote towns in the north. It is located on the arctic ocean beyond 70° north, which is far north of Yakutsk, Nuuk in Greenland, Yellowknife of the Northern Territories or Fairbanks of Alaska.

The blizzard and snow will be brutal, so this is my best spot to hunker down for 5 days, or 120 hours of storms.

To get to this remote town, you have to go across massive Arctic mountain plateaus and passes, or you can choose to head through the coldest place in Norway with its -51°c record lows. It’s like a Fellowship of the Ring journey, but much colder, and without the ring… more like The THING!

But this town also has a distinct security challenge to deal with, almost like an echo from the Cold War, but with new and very current conflicts taking the front seat.

It is one of only 3 harbors that are still accessible to the Russian fishing fleet to re-supply at. And with the increased scrutiny and heightened military presence of the high north, it has become a town where the local population are warned to be on the lookout for covert intelligence gathering by foreign powers, or to put it simply, be on the lookout for spies.

This is the backdrop for this Arctic story, and why my strange encounters at 3am in the blizzard night took on a very different and unnerving meaning.

5 days hunkering down in the spy town of the arctic north, what could possibly happen to a lone traveler in a van with many cameras in a town with heightened security measures in place….
