Hello, and welcome to Dreaming Ages History. Tonight we take a slow, calm, hour-long journey through the Viking Age: from Scandinavian farms and fjords and the first longships, through raids and settlements in the British Isles and Ireland, through the Danelaw and Alfred's hard-won peace, through Frankish rivers and Rus roads toward Byzantium, through Iceland's open law-things, Greenland's fragile farms, and Vinland's brief western shore, into looms, rune stones, and quiet gods, and at last to Christian kings and the soft closing of an age.
We begin with longhouse smoke and clinker planks, then follow Lindisfarne's alarm into Dublin's lanes and Jorvik's rain. We linger with Cnut's North Sea crown and Rollo's Seine lands becoming Normandy, rest among thing-fields and spindle-work, and finally watch church bells rise beside harbours that once feared strange sails.
This is a quiet bedtime documentary, told slowly and calmly to help you relax, unwind, and drift off to sleep. There are no loud sounds or sudden changes, and no graphic violence: just a soft voice, slow images, and a very old northern sea.
Where are you listening from tonight, and what time is it there? Tell us in the comments. We love to see how far the North's story reaches.
A note from Dreaming Ages:
These episodes are written to be historically careful and sleep-safe. Where historians disagree—on Great Army size, Vinland's extent, how tightly the word Viking should bind, or how fast Christianisation moved—the narration says so. Chronology follows conventional outlines of the Viking Age from the late eighth to the mid-eleventh century. If a detail helps you rest more than it impresses a seminar, that is intentional.
