The Old East End of Burlington: Hidden History

David Cawley, a 30-year resident of Burlington and neighbor living on Nash Place, has been re-discovering the history of the neighborhood since his retirement as operations manager for Efficiency Vermont. Dave will present some of the less known history about the land between East Avenue and the Winooski River. The area has a history of development that is unique in Burlington. In the early 19th century, the neighborhood was connected not only through land ownership but by family ties, farming and mill enterprises and religious connections. The area was a smuggling hot spot, and in 1808 the site of a notorious shoot-out with Federal authorities. The legacies of the past are still with us today embodied in the streets, buildings, homes, and even one family who has continuously lived in the Old East End since the 1830s. We are pleased for Dave to be with us today to help us re-discover the neighborhood that is the “Birthplace of Burlington”.
