Hidden on the isle lies a graveyard holding the remains of forty-eight ancient Scottish kings. This isn’t just a scenic ruin; it is the spiritual cradle where Christianity first ignited in Scotland.

In AD 563, Saint Columba arrived on these shores from Ireland with twelve companions, establishing a monastery that quickly grew into one of Western Europe's most influential religious centres. It was here that monks created incredible artistic works, including early portions of the famed Book of Kells. For centuries, kings of Scotland, Ireland, and Norway sought their final resting place in Iona's ground. Today, the standing high crosses and restored medieval abbey stand as quiet witnesses to over fourteen centuries of faith and art.

Beyond its historical roots, this small island packs an incredible punch for travellers. Step off the ferry and feel the immediate shift to a slower pace of life. Walk through beautifully preserved cloister ruins at Iona Abbey and admire intricate stone carvings that survived centuries of Atlantic storms. Wander south over wildflower-covered machair grasslands to find colourful pebbles on the shore of St Columba's Bay, or take in turquoise waters and quiet white-sand bays that look like they belong in the tropics—just bring a warm jacket!
