The "Pearl of Gorenjska region", as the town of Bled is quite often described, has a long tradition in Slovenian ice hockey. Many renowned players, former and current, come from the Bled area or have at one point of their careers played here.

After the IIHF U20 WC Division I-B in 2011, the IIHF Women’s WC Division II-A in 2016 and IIHF U18 Division I-A and I-B in 2017, Bled will once again host U20 World Championship of Division I Group B which includes young ice hockey players from Italy, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Slovenia and Ukraine who will in the days from 9th to 15th December battle for promotion to the Division I-A.
