What does an ordinary life in Oslo really cost, and how far does a Norwegian salary go? We look at take-home pay, the rent for a modest flat in central and outer Oslo, groceries, transport and electricity, then add up a monthly essentials budget for one adult. It's for anyone curious about living in Norway or weighing a move there: what the big bills are, what the official figures do and don't tell you, and what life there gives you in return.

Assumptions: one adult. Rents are Statistics Norway's 2025 modelled rents for a modest flat (existing tenancies; new listings may cost more). Take-home pay is the OECD Taxing Wages model for a single worker on the average wage (2025). Food is the SIFO reference budget. The essentials subtotal uses the outer-Oslo rent and leaves out phone, insurance, healthcare, leisure and savings.
