Haiti vs Dominican Republic: same island, same sun, but today one side earns about 8× more per person.
Why is Haiti poor while the Dominican Republic got rich? The answer is younger, and more surprising, than you think.

In 1789 the Haitian side, French Saint-Domingue, was the richest colony on Earth, and the Spanish side was a cattle-ranching backwater. As late as 1960, the average Haitian was still richer than the average Dominican (World Bank, inflation-adjusted). Then the line flipped. This documentary follows the whole story: Columbus and the Taíno, the sugar machine, the Haitian Revolution, France's 1825 "ransom", the US occupations, Trujillo and the Duvaliers, Balaguer's logging ban and the forest line you can see from space. Then the part most videos skip: how the Dominican Republic got rich after 1966, through free-trade zones, Punta Cana built from empty jungle, remittances, baseball and a gold mine. And why Haiti, now facing gangs and foreign troops, never got fifty quiet years.

Note: "8×" is GDP per person adjusted for prices (PPP, World Bank 2024: about $27,600 vs $3,200). In plain 2024 dollars the gap is about 5×. Disputed death tolls (1937, 2010) are given as ranges.
