The economic and environmental dynamics affecting geodiversity and landscapes under global changes are receiving growing attention. But what is geodiversity? It is the natural range of geological, geomorphological, soils, and hydrological features. It includes their assemblages, structures, systems and contribution to landscapes. Geodiversity interacts with and affects biodiversity, being inseparable, and determining the ecosystem diversity.

Established in 2001, the UNESCO Global Geoparks are single and unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education, research and sustainable development under the safeguard of the UNESCO designations. Their bottom-up approach of combining conservation with sustainable development while involving local communities is becoming increasingly popular. At present, there are 161 UNESCO Global Geoparks in 44 countries. In Latin America, there are 8 UNESCO Global Geoparks along with many other projects and aspiring geoparks.
