The compulsion, romance, and desire to set sail for distant lands abides in us as almost genetic. Early man was faced with seemingly insurmountable barriers of water, and he learned to use them as highways to speed him on to new worlds. Today, we regard travel by ship as ordinary and unremarkable. But how did we come to this point? Crossing the vast Atlantic Ocean, where no island existed as a refuge, surely took daring and confidence, and only the wealthy could embark with any comfort assured.
