A retired couple in Fort Myers opens two letters on the same morning: the home insurance went up again, and the condo board wants money for repairs. Four thousand miles east, another American couple has breakfast above the sea in the Algarve, pays about a thousand euros in rent and mostly doesn't pay to see a doctor.

Same dream: sun, sea, a slower life, money that lasts longer. But both places have started sending a bill for it. In Florida the retiree pays, through insurance that now averages around $8,300 a year and the condo laws written after Surfside. In the Algarve, for years, the locals paid, with rents above the minimum wage and a drought that ended in water rationing. And Portugal has already started closing the door.

This film goes through the weather and the hurricanes, the drought, how both coasts became retirement magnets, the real monthly budgets, the taxes, healthcare and what changed in 2023 and 2024. I started this thinking it would be a simple price comparison. It turned into a story about who pays for paradise.

This is not financial or tax advice. Everyone's situation is different, so run the numbers on your own pension.

If you've retired to Florida or Portugal, or you're thinking about it, tell me in the comments what it actually cost and what surprised you. And tell me which state you're from. I'll go looking for its pair.
