Christian Buchet is a historian of the sea whose research sits at the intersection between maritime history, the environment, economy and society.

In 1997 he founded “Centre d’études de la mer” at l’Institut catholique de Paris, to continue the conversation and research around the history, preservation and future of the ocean.

As the Secretary General of the Grenelle de la mer, Christian Buchet has been pivotal in negotiating for sustainable development of the sea. He is also a member of the Académie de marine and Scientific Director of Océanides, an international research project which gathers 300 experts to explore the consequences of maritime history.

As a historian and economist, he is the privileged interlocutor of the public authorities and has been the one to sound the alarm bells with the President and Prime Minister.

Over his career, he has authored over twenty books and directed international conferences, reflections and seminars.

As we dive deep into maritime research and sustainable maritime development this semester, we are honored to have the expert on this subject, Christian Buchet, present at Confluence Institute.
