Meine Reise zum Nordkap abseits der üblichen Strecken: Mitte April 2026 bin ich in Berlin gestartet, quer durch Dänemark, Schweden und Norwegen geht es bis zum nördlichsten Punkt Europas. Zurück fahre ich durch Finnland, die baltischen Länder und Polen. Für diese Tour habe ich sieben Monate Zeit. Im dritten Teil meiner Filmreihe fahre ich auf der berühmten Kystriksveien, der Provinzstraße Fv17, sie gilt als eine der „schönsten Küstenstraßen der Welt“. Es ist eine Reise von etwa 600 Kilometern entlang der Helgelandküste, also quer durch Norwegens Provinz Nordland. Ich besuche Leka und bestaune die geologischen Besonderheiten dieser Insel. Ich nehme euch mit auf eine Wanderung über die Herlaugsløypa auf den Gipfel Vattind. Eine Etappe weiter stelle ich euch das Petter-Dass-Museum vor. Und ich besteige den höchsten Gipfel der „Sieben Schwestern“ („De syv søstre“), den Berg Botnkrona. Die Tour auf der Kystriksveien ist eine Fahrt mit vielen Fährverbindungen, auf einer der Strecken überqueren wir dann auch den Polarkreis. Außerdem gibt es Tipps zum „AutoPASS for ferje“. Unterwegs bin ich wieder mit meinem Ineos Grenadier und einem Campinganhänger der Marke „Bruder EXP-8” aus Australien.

The average American household spent $1,039 on beef alone last year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That number does not count pork, poultry, or anything that spoiled in the refrigerator before you got to it. The families who settled these hollows never paid that. They built a smokehouse in an afternoon from scraps and green timber, ran a cold fire through it for three days, and put up a full hog that lasted twelve months without a single day of refrigeration.
I know because I watched my granddaddy do it.
The Wholesome Meat Act of 1967 changed that. Before that law, a family in eastern Kentucky could cure a ham, walk it down the road, and sell it to a neighbor. They'd been doing it that way since before this country had a flag. After 1967, any meat sold commercially had to pass through a federally inspected facility. The old holler smokehouse became a legal liability overnight. Within a generation, the knowledge stopped moving from fathers to sons.
I spent three weeks tracking down a man named Corbett outside Whitesburg, Kentucky. 79 years old. The last man in his county, far as he knows, who still runs a working smokehouse the old way. He built it for $10 in salvaged lumber and tin. I'm standing inside it right now while I write this. The smell alone tells you something the grocery store never will.
In this video I'll walk you through the full build — materials, dimensions, fire placement, and the one wood selection mistake that turns good smoke into bitter meat. I'll break down the chemistry of what smoke and salt actually do to protein — why it works, why it's been working for ten thousand years, and why the Vikings, the Chinese, the Romans, and the Appalachians all arrived at the same answer without ever meeting. And I'll name the year, the statute, and the lobbying coalition that turned a ten-dollar skill into a federal compliance problem.
Then I'll show you Corbett's numbers. What a year of cured pork costs him. What the same meat costs at a grocery store. And the USDA water activity and pH test results he ran through the University of Kentucky Extension in 2019 on his finished product. You'll want to see where those numbers landed.
This works on any property. Any yard. Any shed with a vent cut in the roof. You don't need land. You don't need a freezer. You need $10 and a weekend.

23-25. November 2025: After leaving the quiet canyons of La Gomera behind, I’m wrapping up the trip on the largest island of the archipelago: Tenerife.

I am spending my last full day doing what I love most, heading straight into the mountains to chase the views! This ride takes me from the otherworldly volcanic landscape of El Teide National Park (home to the tallest peak in Spain and the third-largest volcanic structure on Earth) to the rugged, prehistoric ridges of Anaga Country Park.

Epic 2 week journey. Norway, no cars! (almost)

Norway is our favourite country in Europe, we've been there lots of times now but this was the most ambitious trip yet.
We set ourselves the task of doing a big circle route over 2000km in Norway all by publicly available transport.
We had to research extensively because some of the legs were only once a week or seasonal, but we managed to book absolutely everything online before we even left the UK.
There were some worrying bits on our journey, but ultimately we did it.
This is the whole trip from landing in Stavanger to arriving back in Stavanger just over 2 weeks later. We take you on ferry rides, bus rides, a sleeper train and lots of little side trips by boat, tram and bus as well as lovely aerial footage of most places we stopped at (only Oslo does not allow drone flights).
